24-year-old plans a nostalgic Thanksgiving cabin trip, but her mother freaks out mid-restaurant dinner, pushing the daughter to cut holiday short: ‘She blew up this whole trip because of miscommunication’

  • AITA for leaving the family trip early after my mother left me at the restaurant?

A frustrated young woman sits on a couch with her hand on her chin while an older woman in the background turns away in distress. with a quote: "She said she never wants to go on a trip ever again. I am so done"
  • Just coming on here for advise and how to navigate after this all blew up. I (24F) and my mother (54F) had planned for a weekend trip.
  • We travelled here before with my dad before he passed so this place is very special for us.
  • It was me, my mother and my younger brother (13M) attending this weekend trip. My boyfriend was out of state and my other brother (21M) could not attend due to work (this will be important for later) I drove us 4 hours to our cabin and had a wonderful time.
  • We went swimming, out for dinner and generally had a great time. Saturday night, I picked out a pub/bistro place for dinner (turned out it was the same one we had been before) and we were having a great time.
  • I ask my mother what she wants to eat. She says "Get me an entrée cause I am not feeling hungry.
  • We can share the plate as well" No worries, I thought. order for all of us and we wait.

  • Our food comes and she offers some of it to my brother and I. Then she looks down at her plate then at us and says "You guys ate all of it.
  • What I am going to eat?" I give her a look and say "You said you weren't hungry and that we could have some?
  • You can have some of James' (fake name) food cause it is a Main" She scoffs and ignores me.
  • James and I get our food and I offer half of mine to my mother and she says "I don't want your food" Okay?
  • I am gonna eat and enjoy the football game. James goes to the bathroom for quite a while and my mother calls him and starts scolding him for taking too long.
  • Whatever, I am eating and enjoying my night. James didn't feel good after so my mother gets a to-go box for the food and then demands for my car keys.
  • I ask "Why?" She then explodes and says "Do not question me you little shit, I am your mother" Now I may be the AH here cause I was so done with her whole attitude.
  • I tell her "And these are my car keys, I want to know what you are going to do" She then stares at me and then leaves the restaurant.
  • James comes out and I tell him to go with her. I finish my food and go to my car and they were not there.
  • I text James and ask him "Where are you? Are you safe?" and he replies with "Yes, we are getting an uber back to our cabin" What?
  • Our cabin is 5 Minutes away from the restaurant. James is texting me updates like "She is very angry and she doesn't want to talk to you anymore, she would rather get an uber back home (4 hours away btw) and she never wants to go on a trip ever again etc" I am so annoyed at this point so I drive back and go back to our cabin.
  • I am so done. She blew up this whole trip because of miscommunication and I am so angry.
  • I tell James that I am going to go home (It was 10:00pm) He says that he it would be better to stay with mother.
  • I pack and give James a big hug and he says "Please don't forget about me" We start crying and I tell him that of course I will see him and that I love him so much and that this was not his fault.
  • That mother and I had some miscommunication issues and it will be resolved. I am heartbroken and so angry.
  • On the drive I call my boyfriend and my other brother and told them what happened.
  • My boyfriend said that he supported whatever decision I made. My brother was more concerned with James being with my mother.
  • I reached home at around 2:30am and James messaged me today that they got home safely.
  • My mother hasn't talked to me but James is updating me as we speak. I am at a lost.
  • Did I do something wrong? Could I have done something differently? AITA?
